"Grow Hawaii"

Kyo-ya is a proud partner with Grow Hawaii (www.growhi.org), an educational program aimed to create lifelong “buy local, eat local” consumers by engaging students, starting in elementary school. Led by the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools (HAIS), in partnership with the Hawaii State Departments of Education & Agriculture, the program aims to significantly enrich the educational dialogue in all private and public schools statewide concerning the urgency for growing food in the islands.
 
To kick-off Grow Hawaii’s three-year pilot program in Hawaii schools to incorporate local produce in school cafeteria menus, Kyo-ya’s Sheraton Waikiki hosted students, parents and faculty from 13 public and private charter schools across the state to attend the annual “Grow Hawaii” event since its inception in 2010.

The event included a variety of interactive workshops including pizza making using fresh herbs, growing sustainable school gardens, and farm-to-table cooking demonstrations. The highlight of the event was a cooking challenge where 10 local “celebrity chefs” led teams of 4-5 students in a competition similar to “Iron Chef.”
