Hawaiian "Annual Blessing"

This award-winning event highlights the Native Hawaiian’s connection to the aina, or land. Each year the staff of the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa chooses a plant and a Hawaiian mantra to serve as a common goal for the year. Past plants chosen have included taro, pineapple, sugar cane and breadfruit. The entire staff gathers as the plants are planted on the resort grounds and blessed by a local kupuna (elder). After the blessing a plaque is placed nearby to explain the plant’s significance to guests.

In 2008, the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa received a Hawaii Tourism Authority “Keep it Hawaii – Lehua Maka Noe” award for its “Annual Blessing.”
