Celebrating Herb Kane

The Royal Hawaiian, a Luxury Collection Resort unveiled and blessed legendary local artist Herb Kane’s last commissioned painting, titled “Kamehameha Landing,” on October 21, 2011. The painting, commissioned by Kyo-ya Hotels & Resorts, LP, is said to have been 90% complete when Kane passed away in March 2011. It depicts King Kamehameha preparing for landing off the shores of Waikiki Beach in his quest to unite the Hawaiian Islands. The painting can be seen near the entrance to the historic Monarch Room at The Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Waikiki.

The blessing and unveiling of the painting was the first of a weekend-long series of events that happened at The Royal Hawaiian.  The day after Herb Kane’s painting was unveiled, the Historic Hawai‘i Foundation honored him as the 2011 Kama’aina of the Year at the Monarch Room.
