Maui StarWish

In 2004, a group of community-minded individuals from Kyo-ya’s Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa created StarWish, a fundraising program organized and implemented by the resort’s associates that is used primarily to provide scholarships for associates and their families. However, some of the money raised is donated to organizations such as the Visitor Industry Charity Walk, the Starwood Associate Relief Fund, and local schools and community organizations.

StarWish volunteers host free family activities for the community including rubber duckie races, car washes, bake sales and silent auctions. In 2010, StarWish raised and donated about $16,000. About $12,500 of this was used for the scholarship program. Other donations included $1,000 to the Miss Hawaii Teen Scholarship Program, $1,000 to the Pomaikai Elementary School Fun Run, and $1,500 to Maui Youth and Family Services.

The Maui StarWish team also undertakes a major community project each quarter. They identify a project that needs support and partner with relevant community organizations to make it happen. Some of these projects include beach and highway cleanups and painting local schools.
